Why do you swell?
Swelling and bruising are the body's innate responses to trauma and surgical procedures, such as liposuction. Following liposuction surgery, millions of cells are relocated to the treated area to accelerate the healing of injured tissue. Additionally, excess fluid may become trapped in the body's tissues, leading to inflammation. Consequently, swelling plays a crucial role in the recovery from liposuction, aiding in the faster healing of tissues and muscles.
When do you swell?
Swelling after liposuction typically occurs soon after the procedure and can be most noticeable during the first few days. It tends to peak within the first week and gradually decreases over the following weeks and months. The exact timeline and extent of swelling can vary depending on the individual, the specific areas treated, and the surgical technique used. It's essential to follow our aftercare instructions to manage and reduce swelling effectively.
Swelling timeline:
Understanding the various stages of liposuction recovery is crucial for preventing post-operative complications…
1-2 weeks post-op - In the first two weeks, you'll likely face severe swelling and sharp pain. Anaesthesia might cause nausea and dizziness. Prioritise rest, hydration, pain meds, and easy-to-digest food.
3-5 weeks post-op - From the second week on, you'll feel less pressure and tightness, and swelling will decrease. You'll start to see some results, but there may still be inflammation and lumps in some areas.
6+ weeks post-op - By this point, swelling is minimal, and your surgery's final results become apparent. To reduce any remaining swelling, wear a compression garment and engage in daily moderate exercise.
How to reduce swelling?
The majority of liposuction swelling will decrease on its own within six to eight weeks following the surgery. Still, if you want to achieve a slim body in a shorter time and promote healing, you should consider the following points…
Wear compression garments
Keep your operated area cool
Maintain a healthy diet
Stay hydrated
Get enough rest
Follow a mild exercise plan
Get a Lymphatic Massage
When will it disappear?
Since each individual's response to liposuction varies, it's challenging to pinpoint an exact timeframe for swelling. Generally, a significant portion of the swelling diminishes within four to six months after the procedure, although in certain instances, it may persist for up to six months. Following our post-operative guidance minimises recovery time and enhances your ultimate body contour.

Many patients either ask or are at least wondering this after they have had their surgery. You need to remember this is purely swelling that is caused by your natural body’s response to the surgery and will disappear.
What does it mean if my swelling does not go down?
If your swelling does not subside within eight weeks, it may be a sign of kidney dysfunction or severe tissue damage. We advise you to always stay in touch with us and keep us updated with your healing process.
How long will it take to see my final results?
It will take around 10 to 12 weeks to see the final results of your surgery, depending on how fast your swelling goes down. It may seem like a long time, but the results will be worth it.
